We are proud to present our 1st featured student. Andrea is a member of the DCI Corps The Crossmen this year and is in her first year of marching in DCI. Playing cymbals, she has gone far beyond her own expectations.
Here is a essay that was written by Andrea on this matter.
"Being a member of Crossmen is proving to myself and my peers what determination and hard work can do. Before auditioning this year for the first time, a group of us (my school's percussionists) decided that we all were going to audition for a drum corp. Each week that we prepared for auditions someone dropped out. In the end I was the only person from our drumline to audition. Everyone had different reasons for dropping out and a lot of people told me that I wasn't ready and wouldn't make it. I wanted to prove them wrong, but more importantly I wanted to prove myself right. I knew that the only way to make Crossmen is to get through the audition. Being offered a spot with Crossmen was the proudest day of my life. I look forward to move in day and to continuing the Crossmen traditions. My goal is to not only learn, grow and succeed during the summer tour but to also be an inspiration for other musicians to listen to their heart and not to negative comments. Most local bands don't march cymbals. I want to change that by showing that cymbals is more than just crashes but can add color and musicality to a drumline. I've learned that succeeding doesn't mean doing everything alone. Many people helped me get to where I am and I hope to someday help someone reach their goals."
She is studying percussion under Art Avila and he's so proud of Andrea. After having a brief talk with Andrea's mom, the whole family shares in the pride, too.
